THE 'OTHER' CANDIDATES

ELECTION '08

From the DNC, an overview of what they would like for you to know about the GOP candidates.

I'll make this a series.

RUDY GIULIANI: GETTING TO KNOW THE RUDY YOU DON’T

Rudy’s Real Record as NYC Mayor: Giuliani is spinning his record as Mayor of New York City as

a cornerstone of his campaign. But about all we hear about is 9/11 and some vague claims about taxes.

A closer look at those eight years is in order. His ratings were tanking prior to 9-11; contrary to his

claims, he actually raised taxes increased the city payroll, and left with a budget deficit. Giuliani has

yet to demonstrate that his record and temperament as New York City mayor translate as a

qualification for the presidency.

What’s Behind the 9-11 Record? 9/11 is the keystone of Giuliani’s campaign. He wants us to

believe that a Democratic president will lead to more attacks, and that his leadership was exceptional.

But little is said about his performance on terrorism before and after 9-11. The truth about his record is

a little more complicated.

Rudy’s Moneymaking Career After He Left Office: Giuliani has become a multi-millionaire selling

his reputation, influence and name. He’s worked to advance the interests of the prescription drug

companies, nuclear power plants and his firm even lobbied for Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

How does a businessman who got rich off clients opposed to the interests and safety of middle class

Americans convince them he can fight for their interests as president?

Rudy’s Gang: Who Are His Friends and Business Associates? Bernie Kerik was one of Rudy’s

closest associates during and after his Mayoral career. He even urged President Bush to appoint him to

be Homeland Security Secretary. Now Kerik is under federal investigation. Kerik is just the tip of the

iceberg of characters that will surface during Giuliani’s campaign.

Giuliani is counting on the same fear strategy that worked so well for Bush in '04 to work for him. I'm sick to death of hearing all the BS about how the terrorists are lurking just around the corner waiting to wipe Americans off the face of the globe, and how if we weren't fighting them in Iraq we'd be fighting them here. I refuse to live in fear of what MIGHT happen, and I get the same feeling from EVERYone I talk to.

I don't think Rudy has a chance in hell of being successful - Mitt is the one who worries me!

I agree im! Check me out if that is living! I think many have wised up to the false-fear tactics! Although I do think our world is a much more dangerous place today then before bushco started their misadventure in the mideast.

Rudy's problem is, of course, the primaries. While I didn't watch the GOP debate, I understand his Roe v. Wade answer has him in much hot water with the "base". Look out for Fred Thompson, though; he's the one (not yet announced, but I think he's in) who will appeal to the base and the electoral masses, I fear.

Will Thompson separate himself, his thoughts, plans and hopes from anything bushco? Can he at least appear to be fiscally responsible? Bush has done much harm to the Republican Party (to our country for that matter!). That tiny number who remain loyal are just that -- TINY.

A little something on Fred Thompson. Note the "looks the part" comment toward the end, as well as "Reaganesque".

"...described as Reaganesque, which is all you have to say to make Republicans swoon."

Other than looking/sounding the part and having a coule of high-profile cases land in his lap:
Thompson's voice has become immortalized in recordings of the Watergate proceedings, with him asking the key question, "Mr. Butterfield, are you aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President?"[6]

In 1977, Thompson took on a Tennessee Parole Board case that ultimately toppled Tennessee Governor Ray Blanton from power on charges of selling pardons.

And being a lackluster two-term (defeated) Senator, what in the world makes him a presidential candidate? I think rm said he wanted a Thompson run. Maybe he could answer my questions best and share what he sees in this man that would make him a good candidate for POTUS.

I think it would be a great improvement to have someone who was capable of speaking our country's language and sounding like a leader, but I also think other experience and qualifications would be needed.

OOooops, I was wrong! Thompson didn't run so he wasn't defeated! Good grief, he has two grown children, five grandchildren (from his 1st marriage which ended in divorce) AND two children under the age of five with his 2nd wife. He will be 65 this summer and has two toddlers -- better man than me! I don't think I could keep up with toddlers full time.
