I think one "real" reason given for the increase in gasoline prices of which to be skeptical is the announced refinery shut downs for maintenance. I've read media reports that indicate these maintenance shutdowns are "taking longer than normal" or words to that effect.
Wondering (conspiracy theory here) if there is an Enron organization out there suggesting these shutdowns be extended, much as the Enron traders used their power in California to have maintenance and other shutdowns of electrical generation plants the summer of the power shortages?

So let me guess... The maintenance shutdowns (very routine of course) will be completed when it is possible to add support to candidates of "their" choice by "letting" said candidates do something to lower gasoline prices? Bunch of crooks!
Tracy, they have endless excuses for higher gas prices. When one begins to wear thin, they come up with another. This time it's the "refinery maintenance." Funny how we never heard this one before. Katrina was a good excuse, but I believe it was more a real reason. Still...
And we just keep accepting this BS.

Rox, not to excuse anyone in this situation, but the refineries hit by Katrina and Rita are not up to normal full production yet, as I understand it. This has contributed to the drawdown in refined stocks to the current very low levels. However, I've begun to believe from the various sites I've been reading the real present culprit is the "maintenance" of the other refineries.
Well, at least $4.00/gallon gas isn't likely to happen this summer, according to an article buried inside today's Eagle, but looks like we're stuck over $3.00/gallon for the summer.
Frankly, I'm part of the problem. I'm driving too much, when I could be on the WTA many days. If all of us (the entire U.S.) would reduce demand, there would be a bit of an easing in the price at the pump, but it would be small, IMHO. Anything would help, though.

I'm doing my part :) I only go to town every 10 days for salt and shotgun shells.
And how conveeeenient that after the winter/summer fuel switchover, after heating oil sucked up all the reserves, and after the "maintenance" issues...
...isnt it about time for hurricane season again? I think it starts June 1.
How much is gas per gallon in Kansas today? We are still holding steady at $3.19, and my understanding is that we should be prepared to pay $4.00 and up by July 4.
