This is too easy, assuming the "week" runs from Friday, 4 May to Thursday, 10 May. My nominees are the seven people who appeared in court in Mullinsville yesterday on looting charges.

Okay, no nominee from me ....YET.
A quick tornado story though.
One of my parents oldest friends was a college student who rented a room from us when I was a baby.
We lived on college street in Topeka, right across from Wasburn U.
We moved not very long before the huge tornado that ripped through there. The old friend was still in college there.
In the aftermath of the 'nado, he found a wooden Buddha, 2-3 ft. tall. It had a ridge around the forehead area, as if to hold a crown or sumpin' similar. He held it for some time before showing a proffesor at the college. The professor asked if this had been reported missing, because it was an ancient Chinese artifact, used to hold crown jewels, from XXX? dynasty. WOW.
There was never a missing report.
I believe he still has it.

Tracy, you've almost made this blog UNnavigable. Full of fun stuff tho so I'll wade through at my sow pace.
Here is a great page that starts out telling us what a Friedman Unit is.

Howdy, my two favorite regular conversationalists!
My nominations ARE: (the envelope, please).....
(pause for envelope opening.)
Huckabee,Brownback and Tancredo!
WHY?
These three were the only ones to answer that they don’t believe in evolution at the Republican debate.
The question of a flat versus round earth did not come up.
It is pretty pathetic when even three candidates do not believe in one of the fundamental principles of modern biology,
but for a party which frequently expresses a world view which is counter to reality,
this was better than expected.

As a cartoon printed in my most recent Newsweek said: Those three stating they didn't believe in evolution is further PROOF that we came from monkeys.
Well, if my friends are getting the hang of reading what I should have typed, I'll just relax even more. You may have some real challenges coming. (giggle)

Speaking of Newsweek. There was an interesting article in my most recent copy called "Generational Tensions." It quotes sons, daughters, grandchildren of some of our past's most famous Republicans on their frustrations with today's leaders. To the point they MAY vote Democaratic. People quoted include: Susan Eisenhower, Theodore Roosevelt IV, Peggy Goldwater.

My nomination for Turd of the Week is Kevin Burke. I know that won't mean anything to anyone else, but in spite of the best efforts of myself and many others, Burke won the primary here on Tuesday and will undoubtedly be reelected as Mayor.
The short list of what Burke has done to - er, I mean for we citizens of Terrible Haute, Indiana:
- Tripled debt in two years
- Reduced police protection and animal control, and if reelected intends to close four fire stations.
- Eliminated our Police Street Crimes Unit which patrolled from 8pm to 4am.
- Our city population has shrunk, unemployment is 20 to 25% higher than state and national averages, and average earnings are below state averages.
- Proposed a 35% property tax increase which was, fortunately, denied by the state and limited to 4% (although it's too late to help me, personally:-()
- Raided police and fire pension funds and the "Rainy Day Fund" set up by a former Mayor, as well as decreasing the General Fund operating balance from $11.4 million to $3.1 million - in two years. As of 1/1/2007, our city debt was almost $116.7 million.
- Caters to special interests - who contributed huge amounts of money to his campaign. $1 million to WalMart - to create a few minimum wage jobs, and $1 million each to two hotels and a museum being built in our tiny downtown - all by Burke's favorite contractor, Thompson-Thrift.
Meanwhile, our sewer system is as bad as it gets, and recently it was found that sewage is being dumped into the Wabash river. By my estimate, about a third of our streetlights are burned out or otherwise non-functioning, and despite numerous calls to the appropriate offices are NOT being replaced. Tagging - or gang graffiti - has increased to the point that even the building at my "safe" job was covered(where I walked out the door two weeks ago just in time to witness a shooting right in front of the door in broad daylight!)
I could go on and on - but I'm sure everyone hopes I won't - so I'll just say thanks for letting me rant.

im, proof that too few pay any attention at all.
Too few voters is a huge problem!
BUT, when you know people vote without being informed you almost wish there were some kind of competency test before a vote is cast.
CONFLICTING. huh!? How do we increase the number of people who accept the right and responsibility of voting and increase the numbers who cast an informed vote??
I wish you could come back to Wichita! I know you'll never leve your children and isn't there a grandchild coming?

im, my deepest sympathies to you on learning you reside in Terre Haute, IN. Do any Chicago mobster types still vacation there?
Terre Haute, btw, is home to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, one of the finest engineering programs (undergrad and Master's level) in the U.S., as well as home to Indiana State University, for those who aren't acquainted with the area.
So, when "the moonlight shines upon the Wabash", what might be seen isn't too pleasant, huh?

Suggested spin for Tracy's nominees: the question asked, as reported, inquired in to their belief in the scientific "fact" of evolution. Spin response: While evolution is an accepted scientific theory, this does not make it a scientific "fact", or law of science. As such, my response rejected the characterization of evolution as a scientific fact, not of the scientific theory.

Only 25% of the registered voters turned out Tuesday. I don't know how to get the other 75% to go vote. I've talked to people until I'm talked out, I offered free rides - anything I could think of - it's just that people here are apathetic. They think their vote won't make a difference and they're bordering on desperation. So many people have lost their homes - including me - and with gas at $3.19 a gallon and rising it's a struggle just to get to work.
It's funny you should mention my coming back to Wichita - my S/O and I have talked about that a lot lately. I talked to my mom the other day and was surprised to find that she's eager to move back west when she retires. She's originally from Wyoming, but would be happy to settle in Colorado where she has a sister and brother living. My two younger kids have expressed the desire to move to Arizona where their birth father lives - although that's something I'll NEVER understand.
My oldest, Josh, and his wife, Michelle, moved to Montrose, Colorado, shortly after they got married last year. My grandson, Timothy Michael, is due September 23, and will be born there. I put some pics of the wedding on my instantspot.
I was hoping to come back to Kansas for a weekend in October when my mom has her reunion at Sterling College. If we come, we'll probably have to stay in Hutch, but it all depends on whether or not we are able to save these two houses (mine and mom's) or if we have to move.

Wow, turds are popular.
Or, ummm....at least prolific!
They seem to live everywhere.
If this turd of the week thing takes off,
maybe we'd hafta get rules n' stuff.
Email the recipient of the "Golden Turd" with a nice certificate or sumpin'. hA!
AND a link to their VERY OWN turd 'o the week thread.
BTW, one thing about turds.
Ya' can't polish them, they just smear everywhere and make an unhealthy smelly mess.
Once a turd, always a turd.

Vaughn! You've actually spent time in Terre Haute and lived to tell the tale? Then there's hope for me yet:-) You are - no doubt - familiar with "that smell" then. Sadly for us, numerous studies and tests have failed to pinpoint the exact source of the odor, and nothing about the air has improved since I moved here.
I make it a habit to steer clear of any mobster types - no matter their city of origin - but my bosses for one of my jobs are Eastern Indians who live in Chicago. Their gently lilting accent and manner of speaking makes it difficult for me to imagine them as mobsters without laughing out loud:-D

im, my exposure to Terre Haute has been somewhat limited. I had heard of the place, and while at Grissom AFB, went there a few times over the four years. No long-time residence there, though, so take no solace from that.
Became familiar with RHIT due to its (unsuccessful) recruiting of the elder. One of her male classmates did attend, encouraged by her. ISU entered my consciousness as the place where Larry Bird played basketball.
Yes, I'm familiar with "that smell". One cannot be within (or near) the city for any time and not be, unless very congested.

Forgot to add to my attractions list for Terre Haute: there's a federal pen there, too. If I remember correctly, that's where the feds keep their death row prisoners.

IM, I can only pray that things get better for all of you. My best friend lived in IN for about a year. To be honest, I forget exactly where, but it was a smaller town. I have another friend who lives in Greencastle. Her hubby is a retired teacher, although he still continues to teach off and on part-time. She works at the university.
And congrats on the upcoming grandson! Mine is due earlier in September...or late August, if he's like the other one. Jaxon Matthew.
I'll check out the pix later when I can give them the attention they deserve.

Because I want to grind my teeth every time I see a pic or a mention of our pretzeldent visiting the tornado sites, along with the equally UNillustrious congressmen, I'll just pick them. But to be honest, just put most Republicans on that list, and that pretty much covers it for me.
I'm definitely in a grrrrrr mood today.

I can't find anything to back this up, not even on Army Times, but her hubby is in the Air Force, stationed at McConnell, and apparently she talked to him. What he had to say about it is not printable. ;)
Has anyone else heard this? If I find anything, I'll post it here.

Rox, on the withholding of a paycheck; I've not heard this one. Something akin to that was being mentioned while I was in the USAF, at the time the Congress had voted to not further fund operations in Vietnam, the idea being all us good troops would get upset and contact our Congresspersons. Sounds like "lifer" propoganda to me.
BTW, if I ever have sufficient time, I'll be glad to distinguish between "lifers" and "career military professionals" should anyone have an interest.

longhorn, those "perfect" people are just too much for me. Makes me feel angry and then I want to say angry words. Takes too much effort. Makes me doubt what I had always believed: different political leanings don't bestow desirable OR undesirable behavior characteristics. With some it seems it DOES. Must be fun people, huh!? Just the behavior that would make you look forward to sharing a cup of coffee or a beer and learning to know them better. No thanks!
Negative people are doing their best to rain on your parade. They know nothing, care less and try to make your life miserable. DON'T LET THEM!
I tried yesterday to draw a "cheeky little monkey," thinking I could paint up some on pocket pal size rocks and all of us could have one at our 'puters to make us smile. I'm not there yet!
Anytime you have time Vaughn. I always enjoy your posts and even learn things I never knew.
