Off topic from the family in Parsons.

At my "favorite little college in Maine", there is a tradition where Seniors, following the last Friday class of their final semester, gather on the steps of Miller Library to celebrate. The celebration is called "champagne on the steps", and has, in the past consisted of the Seniors drinking champagne from bottles on the steps. Last year, the "celebration" resulted in multiple arrests, and 11 hospitalizations (IIRC) for those overdoing it to the extreme. There were injuries to participants resulting from some breaking the glass bottles, mostly from stepping on the glass. Further, non-Seniors became involved, and the whole thing degenerated into an ugly scene.

After much negotiation with the college administration, which understandably was proposing the whole thing be eliminated, the Class of 2007 will once again participate in this tradition, with the following rules in place:

1) Only Seniors are allowed within a roped-off area;

2) No glass bottles; the champagne is to be drunk from cans, as I understand it;

3) If there are any assaults, etc., on police or other security, or if there is a repeat of the hospitalizations, the tradition may well end after this year; and

4) Before participating, the seniors are required to read and sign an agreement by which they are to respect the person and property of others.

The College has taken precautions, such as placing rubber mats on the steps, etc., to avoid the breakage of any glass, and hopefully to prevent folks from slipping from spilled champagne.

Now, I think these conditions make perfect sense, given that which went on last year. Listening to the student radio station, however, gives me pause, as those who have commented are uniformly opposed to the new restrictions.

Quaere: should there be such a tradition? Quaere: Are the above restrictions unreasonable?

OKAY.... a little more.
About 25 yrs ago, I was arrested by this kid's father.
Yep, open container.
He took me down to the police station to book me,
when I got there I asked to go pee.
No big deal, he let me go pee.
Apparently, while I was peeing, I dumped all my pot in the toilet and tried to flush it.
Fast forward to years later, Mr. Basoco was fired from the PPD for improper conduct, or sumpin' like that. In any case, I ended up being this guy's 'sponsor' in AA for a while.
He couldn't help but tell the story about being his sponsor's arresting officer, and the pot in the tiolet that he found after I was booked and gone.
After being fired, he immediatly took to hanging out in the local bars. Tough guy who loved to fight.
He did not 'make it' to sobriety.
I believe he's been felonious since then,
and has a record for meth posession.
So even if he is a good kid, it's not a wonder that he's in some trouble.

A big off Tracy's topic, but something just popped into my mind while reading headlines.

Hundreds Flee S. Calif. Island Wildfire

Yesterday's headline was about the fires on both coasts, the flooding and storms in the midwest. Taking a page from our favorite Phelps family member, I'd say this is God's wrath that we're (1) Not willing to take care of the planet we live on, (2) Continue to kill innocent people in a country we invaded with no reason and now occupy, (3) Have done little to stop the destruction that the current administration has perpetuation, (4) All of the previous.

Tracy,

If you help me know how to have friends (invite friends, whatever) I would happily do a step by step tutorial to the photo thing.

Well, the unsuccesful attempt to post the photo (of daffodils now in bloom in Maine) was my way to send "flowers" to all mothers out there for mother's day, as well as my wish that each of you has a Happy Mother's Day. So, we'll just tell you that.

One of my all-time favorite flowers, VT. Thank you!

And to all before my head hits the pillow after this very long day, my son-in-law said tonight that the plan to withhold all those paychecks I mentioned was halted. Apparently the announcement about it could be found my googling correctly, and those who learned of it were not happy, by any means. It was halted. That's all I know. we were at the Sundowner Parade when he explained, so he didn't say a whole lot. Too many "ears" there.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!!!
