Wondering, Tracy, how you're feeling in your "one piece".
We are beginning our summer pattern this week. Once school is officially out (the students are out, but the wife must be in the office this week) she will ride her bike, and I will use the services of the bus at least two days/week, more if schedule/weather permits.
BTW, Linda, I did a quick look at the WTA route map to see if the bus was any realistic option for your husband. My best guess is that it's doable, so long as he has about 1-1 1/2 hours a day to spend in transit. He would need to catch the West Side Connector, transfer to West Maple to get downtown, then transfer to E. Central to get to work. Reverse to get home.

Oops, meant 1-1 1/2 hours a day to spend in transit "each way". Sorry for the omission.

EACH WAY!? That means 2 - 3 hours daily? And it would only take two transfers, three different buses EACH WAY!? In Wichita, Kansas? Yikes! Well, he drives a fairly small, economical auto. A silver one. tehe That's a joke which isn't really a joke about how much (LITTLE!) I know about automobiles. Ya know, I can tell pickups from vans from sports cars and blue from red from white...
When you break it down, the mass transit system in Wichita is really poor. If I remember, the schedule in 7:00 A to 7:00 P, no Sunday's, limited schedules for Saturdays and legal Holidays, except Christmas, etc.
Basically, it prevents less affluent citizens from getting around. All of the buses start and finish their routes at the downtown station, effectively making any cross-town trip an exercise in time mismanagement. (The only exception to the downtown route to my knowledge is the Rock Road shuttle.)
The City and County now wants to spent close to $200 million on a new arena, but the arena schedule will not be serviced by Wichita's transit system, assuming that most events will be after 7:00 PM or on Sundays and Holidays.
In other words, the poor of this City and County have contributed to the arena fund via tax revenue, but will not be able to participate in the product of their taxation.
In strong terms, that sucks big time.

WSC, exactly.
Linda, WSC has clearly identified the issues with the local bus system. I can afford to use it from a time perspective only because it passes right in front of where I live, and the trip itself takes about the same as when I drive the car. No transfer, one bus, direct shot.
Sorry for the lack of participation. Shit happens. Many years ago when I lived in Wichita, I rode the bus....TWICE. Damn, after the BS that WSC describes, I believe I kooda walked across town faster!
I remember riding the bus when I was a kid. It stopped down at the corner of our block, catty-corner from West High School. My dad would take it downtown often. (He didn't drive.) I remember one night when I was maybe 10 or 11, my dad called from Fairland Cafe (anyone remember that one?) across from Macy's to tell me to catch the bus and meet him. My my was in the hospital and he had been up to see her, I think. Well, I didn't want to ride the bus by myself. I was at "that age". So I walked/ran and made it in 10-15 minutes, even faster than the bus would have been.
As I've said before, I figured out the subway system in NYC (Manhattan, only), but I can't make heads or tails of Wichita's bus system. How sad is that?
