American Bandstand

Vaughn, have you ever listened to a song the Smothers Brothers recorded titled, "Saturday Night at the World"? I have the original album; they did some decent music but sure were good (and best remembered) for their comedy.

Some on this list we do still see thanks to the thousands of channels we receive -- none of which have anything worth watching, but they are plentiful.

I miss all those old shows, too. Laugh In was a had-to-watch.

Also add to the list:

My So Called Life
Thirty Something
Howdy Doody
Captain Kangaroo
Murphy Brown
Golden Girls
Mary Tyler Moore

This list could be endless.

Quality programs are no more.

Current shows I enjoy: House; Bones.

Show that's now gone away that was quite good early, then deteriorated (IMHO): Gilmore Girls (the dialog was wonderful).

I'm very disappointed that Mandy Patinkin has left Criminal Minds. He was what drew me to the show when it began. Not that I'll stop watching. I'm hooked. :)

Did anyone watch the premier of Saving Grace last night? I stayed with it about 20 minutes, then found something else to do.

@ Linda: American Bandstand. Do you remember when it came "live" from Philadelphia, on during the weekdays in the afternoon, timed as I recall to "grab" the just-home-from-school teenage audience? While I was but a mere lad then, for some reason my dad would have it on, if he was home from work then, and I would watch away (while secretly wishing I could be watching "Superman").

And, what red blooded young male here in the U.S. could deny watching "Hee Haw". Just watched it for the music, ma'am. (Right; that Gunilla Hutton was my favorite). Of course, I, like darned near every other young male in the country who had access to a television set, would watch the "Mickey Mouse Club" just to see Anette. Ah, Anette; life dealt you a cruel blow (MS or MD; cannot recall right now).

Linda, don't recall the title or the song. BTW, my wife is a big Simon & Garfunkel fan, and she, in turn, hooked both daughters. Listened last night to one of the LPs, and the song "Six O'Clock News/Silent Night" struck a particularly responsive chord with me. Just substitute Iraq for Viet Nam where appropriate, and consider the striking similarities.

My next door neighbor was a teenager and watched American Bandstand faithfully. I remember going over there and watching it with her and her younger brother & sister, who were 5 & 6 years older than me. She had the walls of her room plastered with photos from fan magazines and most were of Elvis...which is why I am NOT an Elvis fan, but my oldest daughter is...???

Yes, I watched Superman, too. George Reeves played one of the Tartleton twins in GWTW. And M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. My favorites were Karen, Cubby, and Darlene. Spin & Marty was good.

Remember the local Bandstand knockoff? On Channel 12. I was on it once, when I was about 11.

Speaking of local, KARD Gang Club. My parents had a friend who worked at Channel 3, so I spun the card cage and the wheel at different times.

Kitty Clover, anyone? I wanted a bike so bad, but I had an ear infection and ended up in the hospital getting it lanced that day, instead of getting to bid on the bike.

(Taking a break)

I love Simon & Garfunkel!! VT, tell your wife she has excellent taste...and your daughters, too. :) That's a good song, yes, it dredges up some uncanny similaries. If listened to closely, some of the words to Scarborough Fair/Canticle are thought provoking--the ones intertwined with Scarborough Fair. There are so many good ones they did. In high school, we coerced our speech teacher to let us play one of S&G's albums in class because of the sheer poetry of it.

Am I the only person that continues to think James Taylor's Fire & Rain refers to Vietnam, even though I've been told it doesn't?

Vaughn I'm a Simon and Garfunkel fan too. I'll need to listen and refresh my memory.

Do you all still have your old albums? I think I have around 200 left. At least my 8 tracks are gone.

Wow, Linda! A Hi Fi Hop regular? I'M impressed! I obviously saw you, if not in person, then at least on TV. :)

Yes on the old albums, although I had to practically wrestle the ex for some of them. LOL I'm still mad because he got the compiled complete set of the Beatles on 14 CDs. But in spite of having the vinyls of who knows how many, my turntable needs a new cartridge/needle. I've replaced a few faves (S&G, James Taylor and a couple of others) with CDs or have downloaded (paid for) my favorite singles.

I wish I had the set of singles the aforementioned neighbors had from the late 50's & early 60's. Hot Diggity, Dog Diggity was one I really remember. And Dean Martin's That's Amore. My kids think I'm nuts, but I can guarantee they know the words to plenty of mid to late 60's music.

Albums? I'm not really sure how many we have, but it approaches the 200 figure I'm sure. We're replacing some with CDs, but it's a slow process. However, I believe that my wife has backup CDs of her S&G music. Story: when she and I first began dating (now that's an obsolete concept!), I'd go by the apartment where she and her three roommates lived. At no time was I there when there wasn't "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" playing (the entire album, not just the cut). Speaking of which, I knew a young woman who worked in the School of Law Placement Office who went by "Cece", as her name was Cecelia; if anyone needs help in figuring that one out, let me know.

Rox, my kids also know the words to much of the mid to late 60s music, together with a fair amount of early 70s music. On "Fire and Rain", I recall a story that the same was about a stay in a mental hospital, but don't remember anything else. Agreed on Scarborough Fair/Canticle.

My hubby Wayne is a lurker here. I'll out him even tho I suggested he add Perry Mason himself.

Wayne knows all the song titles, all the artists, all the movies, television shows, actors, actresses, the lyrics, the time frames... All part of the wealth of useless information he carries around. Actually, I'm jealous but still contend that if I put any effort into remembering surely I could...

Ah, the use of an S&G album in a high school class. Another boring parent story: when the elder was a sophomore, the "final exam" in English was to, as a group project, take a book and build a presentation based thereon. So, her group determined the children's book whose title now escapes me, but is something like James and the No Good Very Bad Day, was a suitable topic. They would each read a passage therefrom, and then relate something to it. The culminating part of the presentation was the playing of the S&G tune "Silent Night/Six O'Clock News", with the channels tweaked to emphasize the newscast that is in the background. Needless to say, it made a big impression on everyone, and proudly I say, it was the students (including the elder) who thought of it and pulled it off by themselves, with our parental involvement limited to supplying the LP.

Linda, that sounds like my oldest. When I don't know or remember, I go to her. I have a fair amount of trivia stashed, but the brain cells keep getting harder to access.

VT, I hear ya on the Bridge Over Troubled Waters. My strongest memory is of listening to it in my dorm room at college, beginning to end, over and over. Then a few months later, singing with the title song as we drove home after spending a weekend with a friend at KU. Fall 1969 and early 1970. Those were the days...

(Singing loudly, off key and all...) "Those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end..."

Rox, you mean you were one of the heretics (as my wife and roommates) who didn't have "Tapestry" playing constantly? My elder, as may be apparent, due to her early and constant exposure to "my generation" music, obtained "Tapestry" her Freshman year in college. On end-of-year move-out day she had it playing in her dorm room, and was visited by countless (her words) mothers standing in her doorway with a far-away look in their eyes....

I didn't get Tapestry until later, on 8 track, if I remember. Someone down the hall had a 5th Dimension album, and we played Wedding Bell Blues in-between the S&G. :)

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" by Judith Viorst. I had to look it up on Amazon. The title was driving me crazy. LOL Belated congrats to your elder and her friends on their project. How fascinating!

Project sequel. Kelly's group went first. The rest of the class was not pleased.

I echo Linda's LOL. I'd hate to be a follow-up to something so ingenious, too.

As for "Alexander and...", I knew you were close, but I, too, couldn't come up with it, so off to Amazon to search 'children's books' and it came up first. How lucky can one get? 'James' was a good guess and probably from "James and the Giant Peach". Weird book, but then Roald Dahl writes quite a lot of weird stuff. Willy Wonka, anyone?

Oh, yeah, Linda, quite high.

Illustrating differences in offspring, nothing new here for Linda, Rox, et al, but perhaps helpful to the "younger" readers. In high school, Kelly, the elder, was one of those "If there's 100% possible, 99.99% isn't good enough" types, while Lindsay, the younger, was one of those "If 90% is an A, then 90.01% is more than sufficient" types. Wonderful offspring, both of them; both very bright, capable (thanks to their mother) folks. Kelly, thank goodness, has mellowed a bit with experience; Lindsay has become a bit more aware of the "just showing up isn't quite enough" reality of life. Very proud of both of them. :-)

Your pride in your daughters in ONE of the things I like best about you. I like to hear stories about them and always smile when you share. Can't have too many smiles!

You won't get by with giving all the credit to their Mother among this crowd, we know better.

And maybe "just showing up" wasn't the best choice of words for not needing to try harder when you've accomplished the best they give. Pacing yourself isn't a bad thing.

Are you the 99.99% isn't good enough or 90.01% is sufficient? My guess is Kelly takes after Dad in his youth; still see a lot of that.

I think the bar should be set very high but admit I don't set many bars nowadays.
