Speaking of heat, wonder how much the increasing congressional investigatory heat played in this?

What does his resignation mean to the ongoing investigations he is involved with? the outing of Plame, the firing of the attorneys, etc., etc.

Will the investigations just stop now that he is gone? I have so many questions and can't even find the words to ask them.

Does he have immunity? I understand even if he was found guilty of anything he would be pardoned or whatever that thing Scooter got was called. But is he now able to waltz off into the sunset to write his book and teach politics at the university level?

Linda, I suspect that his resignation will act as a damper, in part, on the continuation of the investigations. While I'm not into conspiracy theory, it seems to me that given the mounting number of problems being investigated and the existence of a number of trails leading back to Mr. Rove's office, his resignation might be viewed as a political master stroke to give the current President just enough cover to survive unscathed through the remainder of his term.

At present, Mr. Rove has no immunity. It may well be that a material number of folks in D.C. will breathe a sigh of relief and allow him to waltz off to write and teach without more. As his mere presence is seen as evil incarnate by many, his absence will go far to assuage their fears and anxiety. This, plus the approach of the 2008 elections, will, IMHO, cause the attention of the Congress to be diverted to other things; this may be good, but the investigations should continue, I believe. Unfortunately, Mr. Rove's absence will allow the "fishing expedition" cries to have a bit more perceived validity by those now on the fence, for if Mr. Rove was the problem, the problem is now gone, so we need to move on will be a likely response.

BTW, the thing that Scooter got is called a "commutation of sentence".

VeeTee, this whole stinky thing is so transparent it's not even funny. Rove is a "made man" who is plenty wealthy and hopes to just fade from view.

Ya know, there is some speculation that Pelosi traded FISA for Rove's resignation.

There is also speculation that new evidence in the Ney/Cunningham/Abramhoff ongoing investigation is leading directly to Rove.

And there is also speculation that Rove was caught in Larry Flint's web and will have some personal dirt outed shortly. Although I cant imagine what would top vitter's scandal.

These speculations brought to you by the western kansas tinfoil militia....

Tracy, yep.

Listening to "Both Sides Now" (J. Collins, 1968); wonder if that (the title, not the lyrics) will be descriptive of Mr. Rove soon, or even the working title of his forthcoming book?

longhorn, good to hear from you and "the western kansas tinfoil militia". Love the speculation, any one of which makes sense.

Leahy swears up and down he is going to continue investigations, but the one that gives me cold chills is Pelosi selling out FISA for Rove. It's hard to believe, but then, most of what the congressional democrats have/have not done would have been unbelievable if predicted in 06.

Could this also have been spector's "something big" from the white house that never materialized?

Lots of people also wondering what happened to all the "big news" Larry Flynt was going to publish? Not much said since then.

And Susan Ralston has offered to give up "white house officials" AND the RNC email account info in exchange for immunity. The govt said they'd try to get the info elsewhere and she still doesnt have immunity.

Of course, who needs immunity with pardons and "commutations of sentences"...

Shows just how serious (not) the investigation is. Ralston is a "little fish" in the grand scheme of things, and to refuse to consider a request for immunity in such a case... Maybe the government doesn't want to make another error comparable to Lt. Col. Oliver North, USMC, Retired. Yeah, and porcine mammals fly.

But, longhorn, you're ultimately correct. Who needs immunity given the existence of pardons, etc.?

In Larry Flynt's defense (ugh), he made it quite clear that he'd hold his "big news" until such a time as he believed it was totally credible AND would be a big item. Maybe he has nothing, maybe he's been bought, and maybe it's just premature to bring it forward. I don't know, but I still think Vitter was the tip of a very large iceberg.

VT, I think the reluctance of giving Ralston immunity comes from the bad experience of Monica Goodling and the other twit that testified with immunity. Neither gave a damn bit of info, probably committed perjury, and they happily skipped off with their immunity.

I agree that the democrats in congress are not serious about the investigations, impeachment, or anything else that might interfer with the corporate campaign donations. I agree with the speculation that they will do NOTHING to rein in bushco because they intend to use those same powers when they win the white house in 08.

Someone should tell congress 08 is a looooooong way off....

Yep, longhorn, all you say makes sense, and 08 is indeed a long way off, allowing time for manipulation, etc., through the exercise of the powers being asserted.

Interesting!

I run off to the store and an old friend shows up with such a wonderful lot of food for thought.

I'm pretty sick of ALL of them right now! But Rove can't be allowed to ride off into the sunset!

Revolution anyone?

heheheheh Good to see you too Linda! The "internets" are a buzzin today about the rovester. Many think he is just going to join fred thompson's campaign where he will work again with his protege Tim Griffin of the Arkansas USA firing fame. He's already on board with fred. Ya know, they like blank slate candidates so they can paint them with any brush...

Others think this is either Abramhoff or USA firing fallout. I doubt it, since he is much safer in the white house than anywhere else. Of course, as VT and I noted, probably NO ONE is really in danger from congressional investigation.
