Tracy, it is. Some of the data therein is simply a reflection of statistical reality (the number of "honors" students), some of the data is just no more than a statement of the obvious (the change of careers), some supports my thoughts on education (by year three, much of what was learned in years 1 and 2 is obsolete). The historical note on Great Britain was something I didn't know.

Thus, education needs to be (back to my "favorite" topic) teaching what we know, combined with teaching the students how to learn as things change, giving the students a foundation for learning the new "stuff". Kinda like being a lawyer, only much faster change.

The statements concerning supercomputers, then laptops/desktops comes as little surprise to me, as I have watched, in awe, the increase in computing power from what it was in 1969 ( a computer with accessories filling a room) to now (a desktop with I don't know how much more power) to what is forecast over the next 40 years or so. What has to be realized is that a computer is no more than a tool, and will continue to be a tool until such time as AI is developed to a much higher degree than that which it is at present. Even then, the computer will still be a tool, just a more "intelligent" one.

ha ha, VT on "actually".

Did anyone else see the movie "Colossus: The Forbin Project" back in the early 70's? It came out in 1970, about the same time "Andromeda Strain" did. In fact, I think I saw them together at a drive-in. The idea of a super-intelligent computer reminded me.

I've been aware of how fast technology has advanced since my parents' generation, but after seeing the video, I'm reminded of just how it's picked up speed within my generation. It's truly mind boggling.

Well, Rox, I had time to recover. :-)

You mean you went to a drive in in your younger days and actually WATCHED the movies? Bummer of a date, right? >grin with leer<

Speaking of changes in technology, my mother never fails to comment on the changes in her (now nearing 80 year) lifetime. She considers most to have been favorable, but her vote's still out on the computers (although she truly enjoys playing games on hers). Her favorite technological advance? Oral contraception.

"Oral contraception."

I can relate to that. Savvy woman, your mother.
What is insane is the price of those oral contraceptives over the years. My daughter pays just over $40 for a month's supply. She has insurance, but it only pays a smidgeon. Back in the early 70's, I paid $3 a month. Yes, I know the price of everything has gone up, but have most things gone up X 133?

It just so happens that I DID see a few movies back then. >g< Bummer of a date? Yeah, and I married him. Call me clueless... Truthfully, I saw a lot of movies in the summertime with "the girls". While the guys were off bar hopping, we were at the movies. Just don't use the word "vodka" and "drive-in" in the same sentence, okay?

Rox, will do, so long as you don't use the words "tequila" and "drive-in" in the same sentence. Deal?
