A dog lover am I, too, Tracy, and I compute my age at various stages of my youth by the dog(s) we had at the time as well. I'm such a dog lover that we don't have one, as I believe it is not in the best interests of any canine to be cooped up for all the insane hours we work, and to not be able to run free from time to time. Of course, I'm a larger dog person; Labs, collies, etc. My folks, after I was in school, were able to buy a place "out in the country" and live there for a while (until my dad died). They acquired a St. Bernard - Lab mix, named Bingo, that was large enough to scare anyone, although the biggest threat he presented was licking one to death. He would beg to go out into the blizzard, stand with his face into the wind in the driving snow, and be happier than anything. In the summer, he'd swim in the pond.

I love dogs too. I love the story about how dog came to the new world. It is said in native lore that when the continents separated, all the animals were on one side of the widening divide, and man was on the other side. Slowly the continents split and then drifted apart, man an animal watching each other get smaller in the distance, until, at the very last moment, dog could abide the separation no longer and jumped the divide to stand by the side of man. And together, they watched the other animals and continents drift away.

Ok, so it isnt scientific or biblical, but I like the idea of it anyway. I thought about that story when my dog would come, for no reason, to sit or stand by my side.

God love dogs. They keep some of us human :)

Thanks for the story, lh; I, too, like the idea of it. I concur in your final sentiment.

As unpleasant as this is, it does relate to dogs:

Per cnn.com, the remaining co-defendants in the Michael Vick matter entered pleas in the matter. The affidavits that were a part of the plea had very disturbing details.

It appears that there are conflicting views on when Mr. Vick had to accept the plea deal. According to one source, the time has already passed; according to one of his attorneys, no specific deadline was set.

What appears clear is that if the deal is not accepted, Mr. Vick faces a RICO charge, once the grand jury hears the evidence and hands up its indictment thereon. If this happens, the stakes just got very, very big.

Dog fighting, cock fighting, bull fighting, etc. WTF?So much for dogs keeping us human. I did say some of us though :)

I cant imagine cruelty even though it's all around me. I cant imagine animals suffering in feedlots, chicken crates, veal crates and being shipped in those big cattle trucks with no water and a driver who doesnt obey the rules.

Not that I'm a vegetarian, but who could own an animal and then say it had no soul, no pain, no suffering, no joy?

No joy? Hell, you should hear the chickens when I walk their way with slop bucket in one hand and water bucket in the other.

Now THAT's joy!

Of course, it was very un-p.c. for me to say "own" an animal. I am, of course, merely their human companion...

My dog owns me too. My two cats allow the rest of us to reside in their home IF we provide good enough care. They are all very special to me and make me feel needed at a time when maybe I'm not needed so much anymore.
