CNN is currently reporting that bush is making a speech (to a very very friendly audience, of course!) and is making a comparison between Iraq and Vietnam. But hold it, not the comparisons everyone else is making! His comparison is that IF we pull out of Iraq prematurely we will be responsible for the slaughter of innocent civilians (like happened in Vietnam).

Now, wasn't one of the reason for going to war because Saddam was such a bad person and was slaughtering innocent civilians? So, was this happening before bush's war? If it continued to happen it now becomes our responsibility? It wasn't our fault before the war, hasn't been / isn't our fault while the war is raging, but will be if we leave?

You gotta have some messed up thinking to follow the talking points of bushco.

Fight Terrorism: Utilize the Stirling Engine!

OK, I just made that one up. Linked article discusses the "evil" of oil and gas resources located where they are due to geological forces, how the same presents Russia (as well as our good buddies in the Middle East) the power to affect the security of all. See the last part of the article to find out what the Stirling engine has to do with this.

Anyone else find it interesting in the reaction of al Maliki to W's remarks yesterday? You know, I'm reading that as an invitation to leave, which ought to be accepted, then Mr. al Maliki might just get to experience the same end as Saddam (if he's lucky).

Linda, the "logic" there sounds like it came straight from Dr. Kissinger. Geez.

Now for a whine; the building management just called, the pump on the circulating tower has "busted", so no air conditioning for the next 1 1/2 hours or so (if we're lucky). I wondered why I could already wring out my shirt.....

And, for those who would like to see a picture of the younger in her native state; as I mentioned a few days ago, the blogging assistant admissions officer has posted a "thank you" to the summer student workers as a part of her post on how busy they've been. Well, the post has been updated with pictures of most of the students. I didn't know before I saw the pics that they were provided shirts with their names on them. Maybe I need a job next summer (I could use some new shirts....).

I've looked at several categories at the Colby website. Can you give me some clue? I like scavenger hunts but usually get clues.

I'm having trouble picturing the building you're in. I looked up the address and can see the bank on the NE corner and figure you would be on the SE corner, but can't picture it. Am I even thinking of the right location? Or maybe that's WAAAAAY too much info for a public blog. Probably!

Linda, the building we're in is on the SW corner of the intersection of Broadway and Douglas. Now called the Broadway Plaza Building, long time residents likely know it by its former name, the Brown Building.

Sorry about no clues; glad you found her (yes, she's a really good person, and her parents are very proud of her).

A lifetime ago (early 70s) I worked at the Litwin Corporation (4th floor of what was then called the Litwin Bldg.). Is the Litwin bldg. now one the Minnesota men have made into homes? I haven't spent much time downtown since those days. Occasionally drive through but must concentrate on traffic, where lanes end (SUDDENLY!) and such. But, of course, with an address in the "odd" numbers it would be on the west side of the street. Duh!

Back in the days I worked downtown I could walk to have lunch at Innes Tearoom for a special treat! Used to walk often at lunch and was always amused by the group of gentlemen who stood together about Market and Broadway and rated the women walking past! It seemed to be their usual lunchtime activity.

Yes, Linda, I believe the Litwin Building is one which has been purchased by the Minnesota "Guys" for conversion to condos.

The Broadway and Market crew must all have been lawyers who graduated from KU law school. In the past in "Old Green" as I still call it, male students would sit on the steps and perform the same tasks. Most female undergrads would cross Jayhawk Boulevard to avoid this.

Harry Litwin once offered me an opportunity of my lifetime. I turned it down but have never forgotten or quit wondering, "What if...?"

Harry's office was just across the hall from mine. He conducted his personal business there as by that time he was no longer involved in the day-to-day business of the engineering firm that bore his name. He was a connoisseur of art and women. I mean that in the kindest way because he was always impeccably the gentleman but always let you know he appreciated pleasant sights. A wonderful conversationalist! A truly interesting man! He and I often shared our lunch times. He would come across the hall and sit at my desk and we would each eat the apple we had brought from home. And we talked, we solved most of the world's problems! Too bad no one ever asked us for our solutions since I still think we had some good ones.

Anyway, he offered me a 20 year job. I would be his assistant, accomplishing what needed to be done today and tomorrow and for the next 20 years. His offer was to put $200,000 dollars in an interest-bearing account with a 20-year term. I would be paid an average annual salary with cost-of-living increases only (IIRC the first year would be $20,000 which was very fair at that time). I could be let go if he felt my performance inadequate; I could quit for whatever reason(s). IF I completed the 20 year term the $200,000 plus interest accrued would be mine.

I was a single Mom at that time and couldn't see a way to fulfill the jobs responsibilities which included some travel and some odd hours. But sill I wonder, "What if?"

Linda, I had the honor and pleasure to meet Harry Litwin several years ago. A true gentleman. You may well have been better off financially had you taken his offer, but I suspect you might not be as happy, given the traveling, etc. involved.

Well, it looks like Mr. Bush had to endorse al Maliki at the VFW convention in Kansas City to try to calm things down. I suspect his unprepared comments yesterday were a bit more reflective of his feelings than what the speech writers gave him to "read" today.

Linda, thanks for the fond memories of the Innes Tea Room. As teenagers, we spent a lot of time downtown, especially at Innes's. I miss the downtown shopping. Malls are nice, but memories are better.

Hi Morg! So good to see you. Join in more often and let us know how you are and what's going on.

Last I knew Dubya had suffered a personal loss. I think he has some really serious things going on his life and his blog is not on his radar.

So Tracy was kind enough to make room for us here!
