HAVE A GREAT LONG WEEKEND
On August 31, 1897, Thomas Edison received a patent for the kinetoscope, the forerunner of the motion-picture film projector. Edison and his assistant W.K.L. Dickson had begun work on the project in hopes of boosting sales of the phonograph, which Edison had invented in1877, by enlivening sound recordings with moving pictures. Unable to synchronize the two media, he introduced the kinetoscope, a device for viewing moving pictures without sound. By the 1897 patent date, however, both the camera (kinetograph) and the method of viewing films (kinetoscope) were on their way out. The late date for this patent was the result of appeals Edison had put into action several years earlier when other patent applications had been denied. Edison pursued getting the patent at this late date mainly so he might bring legal suit against his competitors and drive them out of business. This patent decision was highly controversial (other film companies called it fraud) and Edison used this patent as a means to eliminate rival competition. The invention, which Edison initially considered an insignificant toy, had become an immediate success about a decade earlier. The kinetoscope was soon replaced, however, by screen projectors which made it possible for more than one person to view the novel silent movies at a time.

An actual 3D-display. Yes, I am a technology nerd and proud of it!
Does being a "technology nerd" involved replacing the plastic pocket protector with assorted writing instruments and the slide rule hanging from the belt with high tech communication/calculation instruments (minimized in size and combined into one physical entity, of course)? If so, count me in! :-)
I'm beginning to recognize your hit and runs. I sure appreciate you! When do you have time to go to your beach home? ;-)
I think so! I've since purchased a Windows Mobile device(got it for cheap but was refurbished). I use it for GPS and Geocaching, and some odds and ends for coding on just to see how different it is vs. a desktop type environment. Though, I do use this for holding my schedule of meetings and notes on. Fairly nice little device.
However, my actual goal, if I ever get around to figuring out where I'll get this money, is make a CarPC. I won't be the first, probably won't be the last, but it is just to see if I can do it, oh and clean up alot of wires in my car in the process. Sadly, it costs money, and it isn't that high on my priority list. A want that I'd like to do someday just to say I did it, but not one of those need things.
Now, for my "turd" post of the day:
Tony Snow has announced his resignation as Press Secretary effective Sept. 16. Obviously, his declining health has much to do with this, although he cited the need to make more money as a primary reason. His successor is to be Dana Perino, now deputy Press Secretary.
The only thing I've found in her bio which is positive is that she's not an alumnae of Liberty University.
I wonder if Allen will risk another ass whopping? More likely Mark Warner will make a run. Where is Wilder when we need him? :)
Then to prove I'm not nearly as nice as you I also was thinking (and finding some perverse joy in the thoughts) that bush looks OLD! He has aged.
longhorn, I too feel sorry for Tony Snow in a way, the way I feel sorry for any human facing what he does in the future. On the VA Senate race for 2008; some pundit I was reading a few hours ago was predicting Mark Warner would be in, and on the GOP side, a split between a moderate and "conservative" (Neo-con?) candidates.
Something I found funny a while ago; while looking at the Colby website (hey, Lindsay doesn't tell us what's going on any more, and we (merely her parents) had a question on something), I read about the meeting with the incoming Freshman students by the President, Dean of the College, and Dean of Students; one priceless (IMHO) piece of advice from the Dean of Students: "Do your laundry".
It might be a surprise to some that Mom isn't there picking it up, folding and hanging and putting away. Ya know its just always happened without being thought about!
When Kelly went to school, we took her in a fully packed Jeep Wagoneer, and bought a bit more stuff once we hit Northfield. When Lindsay went to school, we took her in a fully packed car, shipped some more stuff via UPS, and bought a whole lot more stuff in Waterville. No one (at either Carleton or Colby) could believe we came from Kansas with such a compact load of stuff. Saw plenty of trailers, etc.
Funny thing; at Carleton, there were football players who were there to help. One young man came up to our vehicle to offer his services, and we got to talking. He proudly told me he was a linebacker; I thought at best he might be a wide receiver, given the fact that I was about 1.5 times larger than he. The wonders of NCAA Division III football.
I'll try once more and then give up. It was fun to watch and listen to and I wanted to share.
Does anyone suspect a setup that will remove the WRONG leader? So bush secretly talks to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. No part of any failures could possibly be due to anything bushco so all the problems must be someone's fault and who better than bush's hand-picked Iraqi leader? So if he can get everyone convinced this failed leader (I'm not arguing there isn't enough blame to go ALL around) is THE problem then he can spin, spin, spin until his term ends and someone else can be held accountable.
