ELECTRONICS ADDICTION, WORSE THAN ANNOYING!

OPEN THREADS

In June, addiction experts at an American Medical Association meeting discussed whether to consider "video game addiction" as a distinct mental illness (ultimately deciding to await further study), but one month later, in Reno, Nev., a couple in their early 20s were arrested and charged with abusing their two toddlers by ignoring them for long stretches of time while playing the game Dungeons & Dragons.

According to prosecutors, Michael and Iana Straw had plenty of food in their house, but both babies were found severely malnourished and ill in a home marked by squalor except for the expensive computer equipment that occupied the couple nearly all their waking moments. lh, YEP! Sadly, I think I need to "admit the problem." Although I'm really good at scrubbing down a bathroom in record time so I can check the blogs.

Well, while I'll admit I do enjoy videogames(World of Warcraft player myself, as is my wife) neither of us is so 'addicted' that we ignore our children.

However, I'd argue that there is some element of addiction that some people are more susceptible to than others. I'm sure part of that is how the games are designed. Random drops, wanting to build the character with the "cool" set of armor and weapons.

I do not think that it is worse than other addictions but I do think that for some people it is a problem. Especially so, the massive multiplayer games where their is social interactions and dependencies on each of the other players in the game.

Take that for what it is, just my thoughts.

AND....it tends to mess with my job.
Jobs are the scourge of the blogging class.
The burner I worked up today burns 300 gallons per hour.
Sure glad I don't get the oil bill.
