DAMAGE REPORT

OPEN THREADS

Kansas weather is what I'm used to. I can't imagine living anywhere else. Well, okay....there's an island or two that LOOK really sweet, but, when it comes down to the statistics, I wonder if "tornado alley" isn't one of the safer places to live?

I hope you didn't have damage Tracy. None here, in fact that last line of storms that came through in the evening weakened and brought some wind and a bit more rain for a very short time.

longhorn, was the quote values boy used in his column this morning a comment from you?

Today is the day the president's veto of SCHIP comes back before the House. It's said the veto won't be overridden. The Opinion pages of today's Eagle have a long-winded, rambling makes little sense column written by Todd Tiahrt and an introduction to a discussion topic on WEBlog by Pat Roberts which is succinct in dispelling the myths of the legislation. The two are contradictory just as the two authors votes are in opposition one to another. Roberts got this one right and as usual Tiahrt is walking lock-step with his president bush the stupid. I hope the voters hold him accountable next fall!

One other topic. This morning's paper has a tiny paragraph titled, "U.S. to spend billions retraining Afghan police." It states, "American military officials are carrying out a sweeping, $2.5 billion overhaul of Afghanistan's police force that will include retraining the country's entire 72,000-member force and embedding 2,350 American and European advisers in police stations across the country.

The new effort represents a vast expansion of the current American program and is the third significant attempt to bolster the country's feeble force since the American-led invasion in 201."

So, the THIRD time we attempt to bolster the country's feeble force at a cost of BILLIONS. And yet it's too costly to provide health care to American children.

Tracy, the only real "damage" in the area was in Andover, the result of a suspected microburst which damaged the International Cold Storage plant. Otherwise, a LOT of rain, some wind; I think we got lucky in some respects, as Linda said, the second line of storms appeared to weaken a bit before making it downtown and to the East side. With that said, it's been a long time ago that I drove in rain as heavy as I did making my way East from downtown. The interesting thing was that the storms were moving so fast that from being in the closest thing I can imagine to a hurricane type rain at Central and Oliver, when I reached Central and Rock Road, there were a few sprinkles. The water was more than curb deep on Central most of the way East from downtown, making driving "interesting".

Hope you didn't suffer any damage your way.

I think, other than some wind, rain was the big issue for me as well. I ended up with my newly formed private lake which should close about the time winter is ready to start up.

Danny, too bad your private lake isn't in MN or ME (the two states about which I have a bit of personal knowledge); if enough water could be kept in the same, once it freezes, you could have a rink upon which broomball or hockey might be played. :-)

On to other "damage reports"; it appears from both the cnn.com ticker and an update on kansas.com that Sen. Brownback will announce his withdrawal from the Presidential race tomorrow. Just couldn't hang in long enough to get the matching federal funds, I guess. Also, the kansas.com article notes a potential gubernatorial run in 2010, which might be an explanation of Phill's decision to not run for office after his JOCO County Attorney term is up.

Do either Brownback or Kline have a chance in hell to be elected to anything in the future? Don't even Kansans have it figured out that a theocracy or even a one-issue candidate isn't good for the populace? Shouldn't they both be applying for an opening in a place that has a pulpit?

Another "damage report" of a sort. Link is to an essay in the latest "Colby" magazine about a parent adjusting to the "empty nest". Funny for the most part, with the final paragraph a bit poignant. Thought some of you might enjoy.

HA! I wasnt on the computer yesterday, so I havent seen values boy's screed for the week. I came her first! :) I'll go there now and see what's up.

I hope you all are safe and sound. It's so dry out here, we cut milo yesterday and today! But we have good ground moisture so the newly planted wheat is up. But as Rox said, I bet a lot of the wheat planted down your way will have to be replanted, and it's a gitin' late.
