Who's running against Ol' "memory pills" Pat?

ELECTION '08

For those who don’t know who "the guy running against Roberts" is…his name is Jim Slattery.

He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1995 in the Kansas delegation. Prior to his election to the Congress, Slattery served in the Kansas House of Representatives, as a reserve Army officer and founded a successful real estate company.

Slattery served on the Energy & Commerce, Veterans' Affairs, Budget, and Banking Committees. He was a central player on many key issues, including environmental protection, health care, telecommunications, and budget cutting efforts. He worked to limit production of the B-2 bomber, and was the chief sponsor of the successful amendment to terminate spending on the Superconducting Super Collider in 1993.

Slattery gained success as Democrat in a relatively conservative congressional district, Kansas's 2nd congressional district. He considered running for governor in 1990 but did not run and Joan Finney became the first female governor of Kansas.

The Labette Dems use the money raised to participate in local events such as the Relay For Life, The Arts & Crafts Fair (where they hand out free bottled water), and other area activities, as well as to support our candidates running for office.

When Mr. Slattery represented the 2d District, it wasn't quite as conservative as the 2d district is now, IIRC.

Best of luck to him; he'll need it.

I wanted to check the following out before posting.

Why I feel Mr. Slattery will need a whole lot of luck against Sen. Roberts is simple; he's a Democrat, he's been in Virginia for over ten years, and as such, will be viewed with suspicion by many, even though they might not be particularly enamored any longer with Sen. Roberts.

Among the many who pay little attention Roberts is very popular. Maybe for no better reason than name recognition. He does visit small towns and speak and appear to listen. He hasn't been caught in anything illegal or immoral. If you send him a letter or call his office you receive a response (form letter!). Most have never heard of his miserable failures as Chairman of Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and his lack of reporting concerning the U.S. intelligence community's assessments of Iraq during the time leading up to the 2003 U.S. invasion. They don't pay attention!

Add to those the people who vote for whoever has the "R" beside their name (another large number in this state) and he doesn't have to do anything more than he is doing to get reelected. In fact, he probably exceeds what would be necessary for reelection. Isn't that sad?

I would love to see it be enough of a race that Roberts needs to do more, explain more, be on the record be held accountable. But I'm not going to hold my breath. He still has that "R" beside his name.

For all the good Roberts has accomplished to date, the "R" beside his name really means retired, long ago!

Heh, good posts all. I think if Slattery actually raises some money and freakin' WORKS at running a professional campaign, he has a chance. Oh, it's an uphill chance, as linda and gster point out, but a good campaign could go a long way to softening up his support. And dont forget, the city folks, who outnumber the country voters, are more unhappy with ol' rubber stamp than they are out here.

But if Slattery comes out here and campaigns, he could pick up some votes. I hope he doesnt do what most democrats do and just write off the western counties as "not enough votes to count". In a close election, EVERY vote counts.

And if they can whoop his ass here, they can do it anywhere.

GO JIM!!!!! Just stay away from the DLC and actually RUN an energetic campaign.
