Just back to the office for a moment after "Donut Day" at NEMHS. Set construction is progressing slowly, as many of the students involved in the musical are also involved with Scholar's Bowl and Robotics, both teams having competitions today. We had a short work day, as Mr. Conrad had to leave about 12 for the Scholar's Bowl meet at East.

As far as set construction is concerned, we finished the fence set, began work on the set for the buger joint, trying to figure out how we were going to build the curved booth that he wanted; we've decided that curved is out, and we're going for angled approaching a curve, using a trapezoidal approach.

I may have already mentioned this, but I've a niece living here in Wichita who I've "roped into" helping with the musical. She has theater experience from high school and college, and like Rox, mentioned she missed the theater. Well, not one to pass up an opportunity, I seized the moment. She spent the day going through the costumes, and "pulling" ones which may be suitable for the 1980s, working with three students who are in the cast or on the costume committee. It appears that there was an interruption in the process (according to one of the students, confirmed by my niece) when she notice pictures from earlier productions. It just so happened when she was glancing at these, she saw her cousin (our youngest daughter) in the South Pacific and Grease pictures, and apparently said something aloud (although she swears it was to herself). So, the current students had to come look, etc., etc. All in all, though, it sounded like a good time was had by all up in the costume area.

We were favored by a visit from one alum who was home from KSU for the weekend. It's the darndest thing; the young folks who participated in the NEMHS musicals while in high school always seem to drop by for one Saturday during set construction. I would expect to see many more over the next few weeks. They come by purportedly to just say "hello", and end up staying for the duration of the day, helping and (of course) eating a donut or two. Always good times.

Meanwhile, the auditorium "remodel" progresses slowly, adding to the tension. I'm hopeful it may be done by performance weekend, but my concerns grow each weekend. The framing for the new light and sound booth is up, but may have to be redone; only one bank of lights is "more or less" ready to go; the curtains are still AWOL; and rehearsals have started in the cafeteria, as the stage is not available right now. What will be, will be; but I have to admit to some concern.

Well, so much for the NEMHS update so Rox may continue to live vicariously. Everyone have a good weekend (or what's left of it, at least).

Well, my weekend has been spent doing that which is my true vice, playing video games. Namely, I've been playing Halo 3. Now back to getting closer to my goal of just finishing the game.

Today, other than that has been uneventful, and tomorrow will be spent with my parents and maybe doing some other things. Depends on how well the weather decides to behave. Now to prepare for the KSU whomping of OSU.

My wife would want me to add: Go Colorado. Granted that is where she is from.

Danny, the football fortunes didn't smile on you or your wife this past weekend, did they?

Anyone else thinking KU may be real this year - IN FOOTBALL?? I know the naysayers are always pointing to the next challenge, but don't they deserve SOME credit for what they've already accomplished?

I think deep down I wanted the Cleveland Indians to get in the Series, it was their turn. But they pretty much did themselves in, didn't they? My son who lives in Boston is ecstatic! He attends games at Fenway as often as possible, takes visitors there. I've been to a game and experienced Fenway Park. Loved it!

Of course Chad also goes to hockey and basketball and every sort of pro game in the big city with it all. Being on the eastern edge of the eastern time zone it gets dark soooo early in winter they have to do something to avoid the doldrums of NO sunlight. I once explained to Chad he could get up earlier and enjoy the mornings. He didn't think that was a solution worth thinking about.

Linda, as you know, I'm a KU alum. My freshman year (1968) was the year of the Orange Bowl team. From what I can see to date, the current team may be as close to that team as has been since.

Now, I'm a "realist", so if they can get by Texas A&M at Kyle Field Saturday, I'll be more convinced. I think they have a really good chance of winning over Nebraska the next week, then comes OSU at Stillwater, then ISU at Lawrence, then Mizzou at Arrowhead on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Do they go undefeated? Not likely; but 10-2 or 9-3 seems so much more likely than such did a mere six weeks ago.

On baseball; once the Cubs lost in their Cubbie fashion, I've not been paying a lot of attention. The Red Sox have shown a great deal of survivability. It will be interesting to see whether the off days have taken the momentum from the Rockies.

I hope to go to a game at Wrigley at some point in the future, and I'd like to see a game at Fenway as well.

Well, my wife only cheers for whomever I'm not cheering for(she doesn't like football and if she had her way, all teams would just tie). Though I went to K-state. I would like to see KU or MU go undefeated from the big 12 as it would be more impressive to have one of those two teams in a BCS bowl game.

OSU doesn't look to bad. If the KU defense doesn't show up to play, I think we may see a shootout style game(which is what appeared to have happened with KSU-OSU game this weekend).

Texas A&M, I've not seen them play, so I can't comment on them. But Nebraska should be a win, they aren't looking so great this year. MU though could be an interesting game.

My wife is of course cheering for the Rockies in baseball however, so I'm cheering for the Sox. :)

Halo 3 went well this weekend, and I think I'm going to have to attend my cousin's NerdyTurkey fest the day after Thanksgiving and "bring the game." For those interested, it is a LAN party/gaming party. Fun stuff for people like me.

There was some sort of LAN gaming event this past weekend (at some hotel?). You can tell how little I really know about what I'm typing. ;-) Anyway, MindScapes computers and three grandsons attended. The two younger grandsons took first and third places in the event - or maybe some portion of the event. Again, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I do know my grandson Alex is serving in some capacity with the LAN gaming group and some future events are going to be held at MindScapes. And, Danny, that fun stuff for people like you seems to be hugely popular so I'm thinking you and yours are in the majority nowadays! So if you go to one of their events and run into an Alex Witherspoon tell him "Hi!" from Grandma Murphy.

Linda,

I'll do that if I run into him. As for rankings in the events. We usually don't rank our games, as its just a bunch of friends and others. More bragging rights than anything. The games I'm usually pretty good at though are the real time strategy games.

Tracy,

Seems they do this year.

Tracy and Danny, it does indeed seem that way. Maybe even next year, given the majority of the team returns on both sides of the ball.

Danny, as to KSU, I see Ron Prince doing some good things; I've been impressed with him to date. It is nice as a KU person for the football rivalry to become competitive again in a better way than what it was when it was competitive in the early to mid 60s, where the KSU game was the one chance for KU to win a football game, and vice versa. I still remember the tie back in 1965 or so, both came into the game winless, and left that way. Bad memories. The same levels of futility were present for much of the 1970s as well, IIRC.

I don't know what's going to happen in men's basketball this year. I think the KU streak in Manhattan will be "on the line", given the talent level recruited by the current coaching staff. It will be good to have that become more competitive, too, although (as should be expected by now), I'm very hopeful KU wins both regular season (and any conference tournament) games against KSU.

Vaughn,

Well, much of the KSU community last year I believe wasn't so sure of Ron Prince. I think he will do just fine. He seems to have it in order, and has settled in. I think there will be some good things in the future as well.

I'm a KU basketball fan, always have been. At the same time, I went to KSU, so I always hope KSU does well. I don't know about KSU, I will have to wait and see how well the current coaching staff does.

I went to KSU as well, and (I didn't get to watch the game as it was during my sister's wedding on Saturday - hope she appreciates what I give up for her! Ha Ha) I really like Prince. I think once we reach a point where it is HIS team (his recruits, etc) we will see a marked difference. Not that the current players are bad or anything like that, just that they are used to playing a completely different style of football and I think sometimes have a hard time adapting to Prince's way of playing, which is where we falter.

However, I might add that in the last few years, OSU has become notorious for their ability to upset in big games... I think KU should be more worried about OSU's ability to pull off the win than they currently seem to be (Don't forget OSU managed to knock off OU who went in undefeated, and that was the year they played for the national championship, IIRC, and they have also knocked off Texas and Nebraska when both were having stellar seasons...) Granted, KU is looking pretty good this year, but really, who have they played so far? They won't go high in the BCS even if they do pull off an undefeated season, due to the low strength of schedule (and unfortunately, Big 12 play just isn't what it used to be either, which doesn't help them much) I do think they will pull off a win against Nebraska, as they are really just not good this year. I look to Mizzou to be the big game this year, if they can hold on to things (they do have a history of falling apart towards the end of the season).

The fiance as well was disappointed by the Boston win, being a HUGE Yankees fan... So you can be SURE he will be rooting for the Rockies...
