ROY WATCH / OPEN THREAD

OPEN THREADS
Pretty much the same today.  He was very awake and semi-talkative.  He's wanting his clothes so he can get dressed.  Much better than the hospital gown he's been covered with (he can't wear it - he's too big so it's draped over him for modesty).
The pneumonia and pneumothorax are showing signs of improvement.  They'll probably pull the chest tube that was draining the pneumothorax out tomorrow.
His urine output is increasing slightly and it's lightening in color (this is a good thing).  Creatin was at 4.7.  All labs are either in the good range or coming down to the good range.
They've been feeding him pureed food and he's not eating well.  They decided since he ate 1/4 of a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and did well they'd move him to regular food - I'm sure his appetite will increase.
Still saying home by Christmas.  And that is all I want for Christmas this year - forget the pretty dress I had my eye on or that awesome perfume - I just want Roy home for Christmas.

Love,
Julie

Outstanding news, Julie. Christmas will be joyous indeed it sounds.

Continuing the good news, Mrs. VT is so much better today; the pump is working its good, she may go home today or tomorrow; the uncertainty is when the pump for us to use at home arrives. Based upon what I saw last night and again this morning, Tracy was so right when he said this is a good thing.

I love logging in to see good news on our patients!

Did anyone read the article in today's paper about Gates talk in Manhattan yesterday? Of course I know I didn't hear the talk and have only the small part chosen to be printed and maybe even that slanted by the author, but it seems to me Gates (Secretary of Defense) is NOT in agreement with bush. Seems he sees the limited role military can play at this time, seems he sees Iran differently too. What do the rest of you think?

Here's the link to the newspaper article.

Hooray!!
Christmas at home for all!

For those who long for the "good old days", just think that people used to die from rotten teeth.

Linda, IIRC, during his confirmation hearings Dr. Gates made it clear that the military was not the final answer to the Iraq situation, but that diplomacy, etc. were needed to arrive at a satisfactory resolution. From what I read and heard of his remarks at KSU yesterday, he hasn't changed his mind.

Julie, sounds like things are definitely looking up.
Vaugh, glad to hear it sounds like she may be home soon.

Hope everyone is doing well. not to plug for myself, but each year I participate in the Wichita area MDA Lockup Fundraiser. This is happening SOON!!! I am looking for donations to raise my "bail". Anyone who would like to contribute can buzz over to my blog page and all the appropriate information and links are available there... They have set it up now where you can actually donate online by credit card... Another digression;

Wendy and Danny, you are two KSU alums/fans who post here. WTF is going on up in Manhattan? There seems to be a concerted drive on to have Coach Prince fired ASAP. This attitude seems a bit strange to me, as he is only just completing his second year.

There are some issues that I don't see apparently. While I might understand a few disgruntled fans who feel there exists a divine right for KSU to play in a bowl game annually, the comments made on various sports talk shows and on fan boards puzzle me. Allegations are made that there is infighting among the team, that Freeman is only interested in his own glory and not team success, incompetence of coaches, players being "run off", etc., etc. This causes me to shake my head.

Not meaning to turn this into a big "fan board" type of discussion, but is there something that either of you know that could assist my attempting to understand this firestorm of criticism that is upon the KSU football program?

Linda,

You can listen to a majority of the Landon Lectures that have been done at KSU online! http://ome.ksu.edu/lectures/landon/past.html That is the link to get to them. :D Some are video, some are sound, some are transcripts(probably depending on age). All the recent ones are there.

Vaughn,

I don't know of a concerted effort to remove Coach Prince, but I do know that the students are not happy with the last few seasons and I think they are getting restless with the "substandard" performance as compared to some of the better years under Snyder. I think the expectation is to return to "greatness" immediately, but similar to you I think you've got to give the man 4 or 5 years to really get the team he is after. If that doesn't come by then, certainly begin to explore other options.

Danny, thanks for your reply. I am given to believe that there is more than student disgruntlement occurring, as the callers I've heard certainly sound a bit older (and references made in the calls reflect the same), with a number of the postings made on the fan boards I've seen coming from folks that do not seem to be students. Whatever the case may be, it seems that there is great impatience.

The dollars involved in major college athletics seem to shorten the patience of many; it was just last year that there were many KU folks who wanted Mangino's head on a platter, even after his team had gone 6-6. Of course, this year he's the greatest. Ain't it always this way? :-)

Vaughn,

It is either win or be tossed to the curb. Well, I can only answer for those I associate with, and so that being the case, I don't always go to the fan boards. I'm not obsessed enough with sports to worry more than whether the game that was played was fun to watch.

While I agree with you there is probably a bit more than just students who are upset, I don't understand why. I mean, even I know that when a new coach comes in some changes have to occur, dealing with differences in coaching styles and areas they want to see improved, etc.

So I'm not too upset by this season. Though I do think that they need to work on winning some road games again(oh and some more home games).

Danny, I went to a KSU fan board or two after hearing of the discussion, and frankly, was nauseated thereby, which reinforced my thoughts that fan boards are generally to be avoided. :-)

With that said, I'm with you on how the folks who are making all the noise can do so; I don't understand it after just two seasons. Now, if Coach Prince turns into Vince Gibson, then I'll get it; but for now, my thoughts are to let the current coach have a chance to get his system in place, get his recruits into school, etc.

I don't want to see a return by either KSU or KU to the not so glorious days of old in football. There is much to be said for a healthy rivalry between the two schools, with something on the line every year, as opposed to the "bad old days" when one or both were merely playing for the only league victory likely to be had.

Julie, while I'm not the size of your MM, in helping my wife the past week, I've speculated that should I be hospitalized, about all that could happen would be a draping for me; those darned things weren't meant for someone of average size (like me) much less your good spouse. :-)

Vaughn,

In response to your question, the best I can theorize is that KStater's memories have gotten EXTREMELY selective... Hello, Snyder did no better in his last two seasons than Prince has done in his first two... It's not like he came IN to this great winning program or anything... you have to give the man time. Personally, I like the idea of a coach who doesn't put up with players crap... I think that is why we have some of the problems in college athletics that we do have - because too many schools have put too much emphasis on WINNING and nothing else... As to the rest of it, I must admit to being rather uninformed to the new coach - but I have to say that the general impression i have gotten from interviews with players who chose to leave and those who chose to say gives me the impression that the players who left had a rather elevated view of themselves and when Prince didn't share said view decided to leave rather than working to improve themselves. How accurate that impression is I don't know, but that is what I walked away with... as far as Freeman, from all accounts i have read, he is a great team player... so I think a lot of those fans are just trying to give themselves a reason to be as vitriolic and well, as much of a jerk, as they want to be without consideration for thought. It has been my experience that people like that usually don't know their a&*& from a hole in the ground, if you know what I mean...

FYI - the reason behind the moniker of Mountain Man is because Roy stands 7 foot 3.5 inches tall and went in the hospital weighing about 430 pounds. He's a big ol boy.
And the hospital gowns in no way fully cover what needs to be covered - it's like putting Barbie clothes on a Cabbage Patch kid.

Julie, as I said....

I'm but 6 foot 4 inches and 260, and knew Roy was a good deal larger than I, and as I had issues with the gowns (in contemplation) I knew they just plain wouldn't do for him in any manner. I like your analogy, BTW, clear and very understandable to anyone whose daughters had Cabbage Patch Kids and Barbies. :-)

Hi all,

I have a smile on my face for all the good news about "our" patients. Unfortunately, these things take time, but you both (Julie & VT) know that you have our continued prayers.

I may be MIA as far as posting goes for a while. Lots going on here, but I will try to at least keep up with reading.
