TURDSDAY OPEN

OPEN THREADS

Today's turd hastabee the local union that bargains with my employer. After two months of talks, they accepted less than the company offered in the first place. Also lost another 20% of the membership in the process.

(cue the music from beer commercial: "Real Men of Genius")

Well, I'm non-union, so I'll be getting back to work now!

Sorry I haven't been posting much lately. I've been busier than a one armed paperhanger. MM says a one armed paper hanger wouldn't be very busy cause he'd have no work. But it sounds better than a one legged man in a butt kickin' contest.

BLEARGH!!!!

Hope everyone is well and not too wind-blown!

Julie, understand being busy, and would be greatly surprised if you weren't, given current circumstances.

Anyone else enjoying the pundits and pollsters trying to spin the unexpected (to them)results of the Dem New Hampshire Primary? A few random thoughts here.

The polls missed a last minute (literally) shift in the voting; not the numbers Senator Obama received (pre-primary polls predicted he would receive 37% of the vote, and this is, in fact, what he received), but the numbers of votes as a per centage Senator Clinton would receive (predicted 30%, received 39%). Gallup attributes this to the stoppage of its polling on Sunday; Pew attributes this to an error in sampling low income whites which does not reflect the antipathy of the group towards blacks.

There have been propositions set forth that there is a "racist" component to the respondents to the pollsters not being truthful on their telling pollsters one thing, and voting differently. There was another set of blogs which put forth a grand conspiracy that the Diebold machines were "fixed" to favor Mrs. Clinton, as opposed to the paper ballots used in lower populated areas. There seems to be little to nothing to support this, other than the "theories" espoused, given the breakdowns of the numbers reported.

Interestingly, the exit polls showed the swing in Senator Clinton's favor accurately; I'm not sure that these were made available to the pundits/media.

The articles I reference above (Gallup and Pew) are linked at www.realclearpolitics.com for those interested in reading and digesting them for themselves.

I read a blip in the paper this morning that Richardson was dropping out. Haven't turned anything on, not even looked for news on the net to confirm.

The pollsters goofed! Doesn't everyone at some time? I am not a patient person but patient enough to wait until the votes are counted, don't have a need to listen to what "might be," so never pay much attention to the polls.

Well, I know if I take Ginger out I will be glad I did so I must quit putting it off, bundle up, go out in that driving wind -- it will do her and I both a lot of good!

Linda, IRRC, Gov. Richardson's decision was leaked and confirmed last night on MSNBC. Too bad, although I agree with one commentator that he was seemingly running for VP.

If you are planning to be out and about walking, may I offer two words of advice? Walk south.

So, Vaughn, do you think the vice presidency is a possibility? Which candidate would you think might offer the invitation? Didn't Richardson work in the Clinton administration? Was he respected for that work (I guess I'm asking if he pleased the boss)?

Linda, I'm such a poor predictor of things political, that while I forge ahead in answering the question(s) posed, you should take this with a large quantity of NaCl.

I think the Vice Presidency is a possibility if Senator Clinton wins the Democratic nomination. I do not think that Senator Obama would offer, as Gov. Richardson would not fit within his theme of "change", given the background. Yes, Gov. Richardson worked in the Clinton Administration, don't recall exactly his position. He was very involved with the North Korean matter, IIRC. I believe his work was respected within the Administration.

BTW, it's a long walk to get back home if one merely walks South from the starting point. :-)

Yeah, well it feels like a long walk if one walks north! Lucky for me I headed for the nearby city park so got the north out of the way at the beginning and got to walk home with the wind to my back. Guess you could practice walking backward.

Walking backwards works, sometimes at least. Got some practice running backwards in the days when I was the worst high school basketball player in Kansas, and have adapted those skills to walking.

LOL. Yes, I saw the Richardson blurb on Yahoo! this morning...

At this point I really don't have much of an opinion on the candidates. As I mentioned, I am drawn to Obama (probably because he is so charismatic) but doubt he will get the nomination - so I will reserve my "investigations" into the candidates until the nominations are announced, because I can't really do much at this point to affect the nominations anyways... Hard to believe we are now only a year away from the end of all this insanity! Hopefully, the next person in office, whomever that may be, will be much more capable than this most recent one...

Friends,

I just watched the most incredibly wonderful YouTube video. It's long at 1 hour, 16 minutes, but so worthwhile, so inspiring I would watch if it were three times that long (just maybe in increments). If you can find the time this is a must see.

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

This YouTube video leaves a legacy few will ever top!

Here's a link to a website for this man, this man's last lecture: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/

Now, I need to go find a tissue and get on with becoming a better person.

I don't want you guys holding your breath until I become a better person. I think most people will live to be old and never be as nice as this man (Randy Pausch) who had only half the time to accomplish it. But I can try harder!

If you've ever heard a great motivational speaker who prompted you to aim higher, be more, achieve your potential... You'll love this guy!
