KANSAS POLITICS

I don't know that much about "Tanker" Todd, but IMHO, Pat needza go! BTW, did he ever get the 9-11 report to Congress wrapped up? He stonewalled so long that it's gone from the media. Also, what's happening in regards to the phony executive privelage and refusals to testify? Will this just dissapear also?

In any case, new category. KANSAS POLITICS

**************************************************

Dear Tracy Phillips,

The 2008 election year is already in full swing, and US Senate candidate Greg Orman and 4th Congressional district candidate Donald Betts have hit the ground running. These two Kansas Democrats recently launched their campaign websites.

Keep track of them online as they work to bring change and real leadership to Washington by unseating Pat Roberts and Todd Tiahrt.

Greg Orman is an Olathe businessman and entrepreneur. His commitment to fiscal responsibility, accountability, common sense, and problem-solving led him to helping businesses become more energy efficient. Greg has devoted his career to helping businesses grow and compete in the global marketplace, and now he's running for the United States Senate get our country on the right track again.

Kansas State Senator Donald Betts has spent the last six years representing the citizens of Wichita. He is the youngest state senator in Kansas history, but that hasn't stopped Donald from fighting for issues that matter to Kansans like creating stronger schools, ending racial profiling and making socially responsible investments in KPERS. Donald's work in Wichita proven that he's ready to lead.

Okay, anybody with the low-down on these two....pipe-up!

Tracy, I would like to see most incumbents replaced. And if the replacements don't work out, I would like to see them replaced. I'm thinking they should be held accountable once they procure this job with all these absolutely wonderful lifetime benefits!

I can't decide if term limits might actually encourage politicians to get all the perks they can, knowing they are goana be booted in the next round anyway?

I think, Tracy, that is one of the unintended consequences of term limits. Poor analogy here, to be sure, but it seems that every President in office subsequent to the ratification of the 22nd Amendment who has served two terms spends his final year traveling around, "making friends", with an eye towards a lucrative retirement of speech making, etc. Why would a term-limited Congresscritter, e.g., do any different, other than traveling only to K Street, rather than internationally?

On the two folks mentioned in Tracy's lead post; I'm not all that familiar with either challenger, although a bit more familiar with Senator Betts. IMHO, he has big hurdles to overcome (I think Rep. Tiahrt is not all that unpopular with the great masses of the Fourth District): a) he's a Democrat; b) he's black; c) his positions on things like school finance aren't all that popular; d) he's from Wichita (NOT Valley Center, which I recall is Mr. Tiahrt's claimed residence); and e) did I mention, he's a Democrat.

I think Tiahrt lists Goddard as his residence.

Yes, that party affiliation isn't the popular one! It's just the one that is sensible.

Does anyone know if the call I participated in earlier this week - Robert's town-hall phone meeting is new or does that happen all the time? I was just wondering if he might be a bit nervous and needing to seem "in touch." It was quite a nice PR move and he played it to the hilt as the interested in everything Kansas Senator. He actually seems like a nice enough man who has his loyalties all messed up! lol

I don't think politicians are the smartest. They probably couldn't make it in the private sector, at least not with as much success.

Those places at the national level do seem to be "good" jobs if you can get hem. The perks!

Linda, thank you; Goddard is correct (didn't look it up, should have). As a group, politicians are not of the greatest intellect to be sure. Won't go into specific identities, but I recall two or three of my classmates at KU Law who graduated towards the bottom of the class who are now very successful politicians and enjoying the perks.

Speaking of doing something other than politics, it seems to me that Mr. Tiahrt was a buyer at Boeing before running for the House of Representatives.
